Cydonia Oblonga

A hardy and vigorous fruiting tree, Quince Smyrna has an open branching habit and produces golden yellow, pear shaped fruit that have a honey sweet aroma. Fragrant pink flowers adorn the tree in spring and summer, and the fruit will ripen and be ready to harvest by late autumn. Quince are generally not eaten straight from the tree, as they have a tart and bitter flavour, but are traditionally stewed to make sweet jams and pickles. Quince will tolerate most environments, but be sure to feed well during Spring, and protect from hot dry winds to avoid fruit fall. They are also self pollinating, however planting more than one tree will improve overall crop yields.
